The Primates of Uganda in 10 Days (Chimpanzee, Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys)
This trip will cover the primate hotspots of Uganda and these include; Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for the endangered Mountain gorillas in Uganda, Mabira Forest, Kibale Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Most of the primates in Uganda are found in the forests. This tour brings you the Great Apes; Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees plus other primates. It will also offer beautiful sceneries of flowers and plants of Uganda, butterflies including endemics, birds, canopy viewing and other animal species restricted to tropical forests of Uganda.
Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe International Airport
Today you will be picked from Entebbe International Airport. Early arrival will allow you to begin the tour with an introduction to Uganda’s primates by visiting Entebbe Botanical gardens. Here you will see primates such as; Guereza Colobus, Vervet and Tantalus monkeys.
Day 2: Mabira central forest reserve
Early morning transfer to Mabira Central Forest Reserve, about 54km East of Kampala. This forest is one of Uganda’s largest remaining natural central forest reserve covering an area of about 306 sq km. Here, we will explore the treasures of this forest using an extensive network of trails as we enjoy the Red-tailed Monkey, Uganda Mangabey (Grey-cheeked Mangabey) and other primates squabbling in the canopy of the forest. There are lots of other wonders Io enjoy in this forest such as; butterflies, and birds (over 300 recorded species) as well as other mammals such as; Red-legged Squirrels.
Day 3: Travel to Kibale Forest National Park
After an early breakfast we shall drive West to Kibale Forest National Park. This is bound to take us the whole day. We shall stop en-route Fort Portal for lunch and continue to the forest while looking out for more wildlife and primates on the main road. Kibale Forest is the richest area in Uganda in terms of primates with 13 species of primates including our closest relative, the Chimpanzees. Kibale forest boosts of the highest population of the Central African Red Colobus. The forest also boosts of a great bird list, butterflies and many other forest species.
Day 4: Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale forest
Prior to Chimpanzee tracking, we shall assemble at the Visitor’s Center after an early breakfast for a briefing for the most thrilling activity in this park, the Chimpanzee Tracking. During the tracking, we have chances of seeing other primates such as; L’Hoest Monkey, Red Colobus Monkey, Olive Baboon and many others. In the afternoon, we will be guided at the Bigodi Swamp Walk where we will have great views of the Central African Red Colobus.
Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
This day we drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park and have a game drive in through the Kasenyi plains and an afternoon launch cruise at the Kazinga channel.
Day 6: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
After breakfast we shall drive for the rest of the day to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
Day 7: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
We shall assemble at the Information center for briefing ahead of this once in a life venture, “Gorilla Tracking” in the forest. Depending on the movements of these gentle giants, we may spend a few to several hours of the day in the forest. A tracker is always sent earlier to monitor the movements of these great apes and therefore finding them is a relatively easy task. At the end of the day, everybody is a winner!!!!! You will be rewarded with a Certificate.
Day 8: Travel to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. We shall arrive there in time to have an afternoon walk to the view point passing through beautiful mountain flowers and plants for scenery viewing.
Day 9: Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga
We will go for Golden Monkey Tracking after an early breakfast. We may also have a chance to meet the Blue Monkeys, Gorillas, Black and White Colobus Monkey, Forest Elephants, Giant Forest Hogs and stunning birds.
Day 10: Travel back to Kampala for departure.
